World Veterinary Day is annually observed on the last Saturday of April across the world. This year, the day will be celebrated on 30 April. The day aims to highlight and promote the work performed by veterinarians all over the world.

What is its history?

Veterinary College Professor John Gamgee from Edinburgh led the first International Veterinary Congress meeting in 1863 in Hamburg (Germany). The agenda of the meeting included epizootic diseases and discussion on standard rules for cattle trade in Europe. This Congress later came to be addressed as the World Veterinary Congress.

At the eighth World Veterinary Congress, a Permanent Committee was created so that it could be an organisational link between Congresses, according to the official website.

In 1959, World Veterinary Association (WVA) was founded in Madrid, Spain. In 2001 the WVA came up with the World Veterinary Day. The association now consists of members from more than 70 nations and national veterinary associations from around the world.

Why is it celebrated?

The World Veterinary Association aims to promote animal health and welfare and also deals with issues related to animal safety and the environment. It also ensures the availability of necessary natural resources to raise livestock.

World Veterinary Day also highlights the importance of veterinarians in maintaining animal welfare worldwide.

Theme

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the burden on veterinarians all over the world. To handle this situation, these professionals require support from associations, institutions, and governments to ensure proper education, training and mentorship so that they can maintain their personal health and wellness.

According to the official website, World Veterinary Day "will celebrate efforts from veterinarians, veterinary associations and others to strengthen veterinary resilience and bring attention to this important cause" this year.

The theme will focus on what more can be done to protect these professionals from the daily challenges and crises that arise during their job.
