According to the complaint, the passenger, Jangneichong Karong, had taken two kittens with her for travel on the AI889 Delhi to Imphal flight. However, she was asked to rebook the flight or upgrade to business class to bring the kittens with her in the cabin. As a result, she agreed to transport them via cargo.

Karong claimed that a tiny kitten could not have kicked open the clasp unless the workers had been reckless with the cage. She blamed the on-the-ground personnel for the incompetence and stated that her demands for CCTV footage were ignored. Karong's friend shared the incident on Twitter and urged Air India to take responsibility for their actions and reunite the cat with its brother.
