Super Cyclone Mocha hits Bangladesh wreaking havoc

New Delhi: The cyclonic storm Mocha, which originated in Bangladesh, has started wreaking havoc. The speed of the wind is increasing. According to the Dhaka Tribune in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has reported that the country’s St. Martin Island may sink.

Mohammad Azizur Rahman, director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said on Sunday that since there is no major infrastructure or buildings on St. Martin’s Island, the storm will hit the island directly. The storm is expected to pass over St. Martin. Due to this, a huge amount of water will move from one side of the island to the other. The water can recede when the intensity of the storm subsides.

Looking at the speed of the storm, it is feared that the water will go a long way. According to the Dhaka Tribune, meteorologist Shahinul Islam has said that the main part and centre of the storm will pass over Myanmar and then hit the coast of Cox’s Bazar. Islam has also said that rain has already started on the coast of Bangladesh, while it is raining in the rest of the country.

The storm has intensified over Northeast Bay and adjoining areas. The cyclonic storm lay centred about 305 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 450 km south of Mongla port, 370 km south of Payra port, and about 385 km south-southwest of Chittagong port at 6 a.m., the report said.

On the other hand, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Sunday that Cyclone Mocha will cross southeast Bangladesh and northern Myanmar today with wind speeds ranging from 180–190 to 210 mph. In view of this, an alert has been issued in West Bengal. Eight teams of the NDRF have been deployed by the government.
