Cannot resign at this crucial situation: Manipur CM Biren Singh amid violence reports in state

Manipur Violence: Putting an end to all the speculations regarding his resignation amid ongoing violence in the state, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday said that he would not be resigning from the post “at this crucial time.”

“At this crucial juncture, I wish to clarify that I will not be resigning from the post of Chief Minister,” said N. Biren Singh in a Twitter post.

Rumours around his resignation were triggered after CM Biren Singh on Friday sought time to meet state Governor Anasuya Uikey.

Many women came out in support of Biren Singh at Nupi Lal Complex, about 100 meters away from the CM’s residence asking CM not to resign. CM Biren Singh came out of his residence and met the supporting women.

Nearly two months ago, on May 3, the All Tribal Students’ Union (ATSU) took out a rally to protest the demand for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs) in Manipur. Meanwhile, violence erupted between the ethnic communities and it has cost 115 lives and thousands of people homeless since then.
