Modi 3.0 Ministry Unveils Key Appointments: Big-Bang Budgets Lead The Charge

After allocating ministries to 72 ministers led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and coalition partners in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, one thing seems certain is that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embraced continuity. The ministries with the highest budget allocation are held by BJP ministers.

While the Modi 3.0 cabinet retained the key portfolios of home, defence, economic and foreign policy, it did not cede much space to its alliance partners in Narendra Modi’s cabinet.

The division of “big” and “important” ministries gives an idea of ​​the prime minister’s strategic vision and priorities for the next mandate.

So it will be interesting to see which Modi 3.0 minister will have the big portfolios, who will get the bulk of the budget allocations.

LARGEST ALLOCATION TO RAJNATH MINISTRY OF DEFENSE

The Ministry of Defense which received 2024-25 the largest allocation in the interim budget of 2018 was left to senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh.

The ministry responsible for overseeing the country’s military operations, procurement and infrastructure development has been assigned 2024-2025. 5,25,000 million crowns in the interim budget of the year.

Under the previous government, the Rajnath Singh-led ministry grew by 15% year-on-year as the Modi government prioritized strengthening national security in the face of emerging neighborhood and global threats.

The lion’s share allocated to the Ministry of Defense must be seen as a reaction to India’s crucial geopolitical position in the Indo-Pacific region, the recent dispute with the People’s Liberation Army of China and the ongoing security threat from Pakistan.

GADKARI MOOT ROADS ARE MOST DIFFERENT

The ministry that gets the second largest share, road transport and highways, has a lot going for Maharashtra BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.

He held the same portfolio in the last two Cabinets of Narendra Modi (2014-2019 and 2019-2024).

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been allocated 2.78 million crores for 2024 in the interim budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, which is 12% more than last year.

The ministry, which has focused on developing highways, building new roads and upgrading existing infrastructure to improve connectivity and reduce congestion, has been praised for its speedy and efficient work under Gadkari.

During his tenure of more than nine years, India’s highway network expanded by 59%.

VAISHNAV’S RAILWAYS HAS THE THIRD-BIGGEST ALLOCATION

In the third position, Ministry of Railways, which was allocated Rs 2.55 crore in the previous interim budget, BJP’s Ashwini Vaishnav retained the portfolio.

The objective of the Ministry of Railways is to update the railway infrastructure, introduce new trains and services and improve passenger comfort. Its budget grew by 10 percent in the previous interim budget.

Vaishnav, who is with the ministry since 2021, introduced a new line of trains including Vande Bharats and Namo Bharats.

JOSHI’S CONSUMER AFFAIRS, PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION FOURTH

The ministry of consumer protection, food and public marketing to ensure food safety and manage public distribution schemes has been given to BJP leader Pralhad Joshi.

The annual budget of this ministry is 2.13 million crowns and its latest provisional budget increased by 8% compared to last year.

The ministry also plays a key role in distributing subsidized and free food to the poor.

AMIT SHAH’S HOME AFFAIRS AMONG TOP FIVE IN ALLOCATION

The home ministry, the most important post in the cabinet after the prime minister, was given to Amit Shah, who held the post since 2019.

The ministry was tasked with ensuring internal security, ensuring public order and monitoring internal security. limit 2.03 million rupees were allocated for surveillance in the previous interim budget, which is 9% more than the previous year.

CHEMICAL, RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS MINISTRIES

Shivraj Singh Chouhan and JP Nadda have been assigned to central ministries, including the Ministry of Rural Development, Chemicals and Fertilizers, which have been allocated Rs 1.77 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh crore respectively.

Both Nadda and Chouhan are new faces in Narendra Modi’s cabinet.

The Ministry of Communications, with an annual allocation of Rs 1.37 lakh crore, was given to Jyotiraditya M Scindia, who was Modi’s 2.0 civil aviation portfolio.

However, it should be noted that the allocation figures for the annual budget are taken from the interim budget 2024-2025. However, since it is an interim budget in nature and Modi 3.0 is a coalition government, the allocation of funds may be changed in the upcoming Union Budget in July.
